This was photographed at around 2500m on Mount Mangrt in Slovenia. It's a little way down from the summit purely for compositional reasons. This was taken after the sun had gone down and the colours were truly stunning. I have a number of images using different compostion and at different point of the dusk light that I'll be posting over the next week or so. These colours are straight out of the camera with very little adjustment. But I had to merge 2 exposures together to correctly record the detail and dynamic range.

I used my 40D quite deliberately with this photograph. I wanted a 300mm focal length and I don't currently own one. Although I took a 400mm with me, this was too long for this particular composition. So I fitted a 1.4x TC to my 135mm f2 L to give me a 189mm. Which I then mounted on my 40D and with the effective Focl length crop, I get a focal length of 305mm. It's also a lot lighter than carrying an additional 300mm f4 lens and this little lens doubles up very well. It's a pain to swap the lens out and put a Tc on it...especially when the light is dropping so fast. But it more than makes up for the trouble with it's small and light weight and Image Quality....Did I say that it was sharp?
I've been doubling lenses for some time now, my 135L makes a pretty good 200mm and 300mm on my 40D.

Please view as a full size image, it's really worth it!

Thanks, it was hard to see a simple composition. The mountain scape was vast and the light was falling quickly. But with a long lens and a sturdy tripod, an upright composition worked well.

This is pretty much what i saw up there on that mountain. It's like paper tears layered on each other.

Thank you. Belive it or not these are pretty much what was there. It was a stunning evening. Guy Edwards who was my tutor for the trip commented that the sky's colour was the most intense and vivid that he's eve seen it.

Thank you. My 40D could barely record the entire dynamic range, I had to combine 2 images to stop the colour channels blowing out.
